Missing Person Recovered (Missing From Weedsport 01-24-06)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sheriff Rob Outhouse reports that the body of Alan Broder, the 61 year old man missing from Evergreen Heights, was recovered in tact in a hay lot surrounded by dense swamp and brush north east of Weedsport in the town of Mentz. The area of the recovery is approximately 2.5 miles north east of the Adult care facility and ½ mile outside of the quadrants Search & Rescue Teams thoroughly searched until darkness fell Thursday night. Those efforts ended due to weather conditions and the presence of ½ foot of new snow on the ground in the unsearched areas.
Search efforts via air resumed today due to the snow melt and increased visibility allowing areas to be covered that were inaccessible since Thursday. Undersheriff Stephen McLoud was conducting an air search this morning utilizing the flight crew in the State Police Helicopter based in Syracuse when the victim was located at 11:59 AM. Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives responded from the ground to conduct their investigation. The Cayuga County Coroner was notified and one of his Investigators responded with the assistance of Investigators from the Onondaga County Medical Examiners Office.
Recovery efforts were hampered due to the distance from any roadway and the varied terrain. Sennett Fire Department all-terrain all-wheeled drive vehicles were transported to the scene to mobilize crews and facilitate the recovery.
“The investigation will be continued in conjunction with the Cayuga County Coroner and the Onondaga County MEs Office. We are awaiting an autopsy report for the cause and manner of death. There is no indication of foul play at this juncture and the scene is indicative of his history of schizophrenia and the effects of hypothermia.”
