Vehicle and Traffic Arrest Unauthorized Use of Emergency Equipment
Town of Brutus
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sheriff Rob Outhouse reports that at 5:30 PM Wednesday one of his Detectives while en-route home from his daily shift assignment in his assigned unmarked vehicle overheard a radio dispatch for a crime in progress call in the Village of Weedsport. Detective Steve Smith while responding from the Port Byron area to that call to offer assistance observed an Ambulance with lights and siren activated traveling eastbound on Route 31 in the Town of Mentz. The Ambulance was passing vehicles that were yielding to the activated emergency lights and siren. The Detective was not aware of any Ambulance calls in that area and continued to pursue the Ambulance. The other crime in progress call in Weedsport was handled by other Sheriff’s Office personnel.

The Ambulance made it to a residence at 2719 Bell Street in the Village of Weedsport. Detective Smith approached and interviewed the operator there.

Arrested and Charged:
Zachary E. Peak
20 years of age, 2719 Bell Street, Weedsport, NY
For the following Vehicle and traffic infractions:
Unauthorized Siren
Unauthorized Red Lights
Unsafe Passing
Reckless Driving
All charges are returnable in the Town of Brutus Court on February 28th at 7:00 PM.

The Ambulance is owned by the defendant’s employer: “TRAC Team” which is based in Waterloo, Seneca County NY.
The vehicle is normally used to transport persons in need and to pick up charitable donations. He was operating the vehicle with permission of his employer.

“Untrained persons operating emergency equipment in this manner is certainly a safety risk. We are requesting that anyone with similar sightings contact the Sheriff’s Office at 315-253-1222 or Detective Smith directly at 315-253-4869.”
