FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Recovery Owasco Lake Town of Scipio
Sheriff Rob Outhouse reports that SCUBA Divers located the body of Mark S. Sanders in 71 feet of water at 10:15 AM. The recovery was completed at 10:24 AM.
Sanders, 47 years old of Fleming Street in Auburn, was reported as a possible drowning victim Sunday afternoon when witnesses saw him fall from the personal water craft that he was riding on off the west shore of Owasco Lake. He was not able to swim to the craft and went under. He was not wearing a required Personal Floatation Device and immediate efforts by persons in that area to locate him failed.
Rescue / Recovery operations continued until after dark late Sunday night. Operations resumed around 9:00 AM utilizing SONAR and Cadaver Sensing Dogs to narrow the search. Divers entered the water and located the body in approximately twenty minutes in the general location reported by witnesses.
There were no immediate signs of injury or visible trauma to the victim at the time of identification. The investigation will continue with the assistance of the Cayuga County Coroner’s Office and the Onondaga County Medical Examiner.
“The Sheriff’s Office appreciates the tremendous response and cooperation received from the many Law Enforcement Agencies, the Fire/Rescue Service as well as Highland Search and Rescue. We were able to recover the victim in very difficult conditions due to their special expertise and willingness to contribute. This was a coordinated effort that resulted in a swift and safe resolution without putting any rescue personnel in jeopardy.”
