Recovery Owasco Lake Town of Scipio
Sheriff Rob Outhouse reports that the body of suspected drowning victim John C. Carmody III was recovered by divers at 1:40 PM today. The “Deep Dive” recovery was made by the New York State Police Dive Team working in conjunction with the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit and the Owasco Fire Department Water Rescue Unit. Also assisting at the scene were EMTs from the Fleming Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance and there was additional stand by support from a NYSP Helicopter.
After the dive site confirmation was made via the use of the side scan sonar the actual recovery operation took thirty minutes due to the safety precautions necessary for the dive in 164 feet of water.
The decedent was transported from the scene to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office at the direction of the Cayuga County Coroner’s Investigator. The Sheriff’s Investigation will remain open awaiting the results of the ME’s analysis.
“I wish to thank all those involved in this lengthy search and recovery operation for their perseverance and dedication. The weather conditions made a difficult task an even more tedious one. I especially want to thank the NYSP for their assistance in the sharing of their technological equipment and expertise that made the location of the victim and subsequent recovery possible.”
