Arrest of Deputy Sheriff for Fraud and Larceny
For Immediate Release
Sheriff Rob Outhouse announces that the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Cayuga County Sheriff’s Deputy in connection with an investigation into fraudulent overtime documents.
The investigation began on Monday 11-14-05 when a Sergeant in the Patrol Unit of the Law Enforcement Division discovered a discrepancy in some overtime slips filed by a Deputy. Following the initial inquiries by the Sergeant, Sheriff’s Office Detectives were brought into the investigation. On Tuesday 11-15-05 Detectives continued reviewing document evidence and conducting interviews. The detailed investigation revealed that the Deputy had turned in overtime slips for shifts that he had not worked some including forged supervisor’s signatures.
The investigation is continuing while other documents are reviewed in an effort to find how much overtime pay was fraudulently obtained and when this conduct began. Other charges may be considered upon disclosure of additional criminal conduct.
Arrested and Charged:
John J. Schlegel age 45 of Auburn, N.Y.
John J. Schlegel was arrested by Sheriff’s Office Detectives at the Cayuga County Public Safety Building at 9:30 PM Tuesday. He was arraigned in the Town of Sennett Court by the Hon. Judge Florence Riley and released on his own recognizance.
Mr. Schlegel was immediately suspended from the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office and has had all Police powers and status revoked pending a hearing for dismissal.
“This is a sad day for all the members of the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office. I commend my Administrative staff for their diligence in paying attention to detail and taking on the arduous task of policing their own. I am sorry that John Schlegel used such poor judgment and offer my sympathies to all those affected by his actions.”
