Gun Shot Wound-Deer Hunter-Town of Brutus (Northeast of Auburn) Central Cayuga County

Sheriff Rob Outhouse announces that the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the report of a Deer Hunter being shot Saturday evening shortly after 5 PM.

The call was made to the 911 center from a cellular phone reporting the incident at approximately 5:12 PM. The call was made by Robert Hart (49), Weed Street, Weedsport, NY who reported that he had shot a member of his hunting party. The injured hunter: Tim Spingler (29), Oakland Road, Weedsport, NY was shot in the upper left leg. The 12 Ga. Shotgun slug entered the inner-thigh and exiting the victim’s outer-thigh. Other members of the hunting party were summoned via cell phone to assist in evacuating the victim from the incident scene. The victim was stabilized and transported from the field/wooded area via pickup truck by James Saroodis, Weedsport, NY, to the nearest roadway: Shepard Road, where he was transferred to the awaiting Weedsport Fire Department Ambulance. Spingler was treated at the scene by Weedsport VFD EMTs and transported to University Hospital where he underwent surgery last night and is presently listed in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

From our preliminary investigation: the shooter claims that he spotted a deer in a field shortly after 5PM. He shot once at the deer from approximately 60 yards. The victim called out to the shooter that he was shot. The victim was found by the shooter at a location beyond the point that he spotted and shot at the deer.

Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives were assisted at the scene by New York State Environmental Conservation Police. There have not been any charges made at this time. The joint investigation continues today.

“This is yet another case that necessitates an investigation where it appears that there was a lack of communication in the hunting party and high visibility clothing was not worn by the two hunters involved.”

Hunters:
Identify your target before you shoot
Be certain of your backdrop
Wear high visibility clothing…NOT CAMOUFLAGE!
Stay in contact with all members of your party.
Know where everyone is. Don’t shoot until you know!
