High Visibility Clothing for Big Game Hunting
Sheriff Rob Outhouse in conjunction with our State Legislators, members of the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office and our local hunter education providers wishes to bring attention to proposed Legislation that supports the wearing of “High Visibility Clothing” especially during big game hunting season.
Our Sheriff’s Office too often is involved in investigations where hunters are injured or killed by other hunters. Most times the victim is hit by a member of their own hunting party. Our analysis of these cases points to poor communication between members of the party, failure to definitively identify their target and the failure to wear “Hunter Blaze Orange” or any type of “High Visibility Clothing”.

2005 One Hunting Incident with Injury in Cayuga County: 1 Serious Injury
“Again it has come to the point where we have to create Laws to protect ourselves from ourselves. Communication and target identification are trained and reinforced in hunter safety programs. The wearing of “High Visibility Clothing” is the edge that is needed for a vivid visual reminder that protects hunters in the field from tragedy.”

Hunters:
Identify your target before you shoot
Be certain of your backdrop
Wear high visibility clothing…NOT CAMOUFLAGE!
Stay in contact with all members of your party.
Communicate…Know where everyone is. Don’t shoot until you know!
