Sheriff Rob Outhouse reports that at approximately 2:35 pm the Cayuga County PSAP (911center) received a cellular 911 call from a hunting party that a hunter was injured in the woods off Broadway Road near Melrose Road in the Town of Owasco.

Owasco Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance and Rescue was dispatched as well as Rural Metro. The Sheriff’s Department responded and conducted an investigation with both the Uniformed and Criminal Investigation Divisions.

Kyle J. Kent 20yoa, of 3180 Turnpike Road in Sennett was fatally wounded when his shotgun apparently discharged while he was tracking an injured deer that the hunting party of 12 had wounded earlier. The accidental shot to the head incapacitated the victim who was found by members of his hunting party. Kyle was transported to Auburn Memorial Hospital. Life support was continued but was ineffective and he was pronounced dead at the Emergency Room.

The investigation is continuing and the Sheriff’s Office will be in continued contact with NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Police Investigators.

The Sheriff’s Office thanks all the responders and appreciates the cooperation of all involved.
