NY: Gun safety
New York is ahead of the national average, but behind states like Massachusetts where the prevalence of loaded and unlocked guns in homes with kids is .3%. In Cayuga County, Sheriff Rob Outhouse requires residents to take a safety course in order to get a pistol permit. And a big focus of that class is proper storage. Why wouldn't someone keep their firearm locked up when there are kids in the house? It's a habit law enforcers have a tough time explaining. "I think one of the reasons might be that they want it completely accessible so that they can defend themselves. Complacency. Why do people leave keys in their car? Those are the kinds of things that you have to try and get people to work past," said Sheriff Rob Outhouse, Cayuga County Sheriff's Office. "Throughout my career I have too often been called to the scenes of shootings where children have been involved, where loaded firearms have been kept in the homes when they shouldn't have been. It really hurts to think that these tragedies could have been avoided," said Sergeant Ralph Gray, gun safety instructor. For those of you that live in Cayuga County, the Sheriff's Office is holding a gun safety course this weekend. It's Saturday at the Salmon Creek Sportsman's Club. The course costs $10 and lasts 5-6 hours. To sign up for a session, call the Sheriff's Training Office at (315) 253-3935. To find out about safety courses in your area, try calling the local agency that supplies pistol permits. For those of you that keep unlocked and loaded guns in the house, Sgt. Gray told us statistically more family members are hurt by guns in their home than intruders.
