Placed in Patrol Cars, Lifesaving Units Will Reduce Response Time to Victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest
CAYUGA COUNTY - To help improve the odds of survival for Central New Yorkers who experience sudden cardiac arrest, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Department has purchased a total of 10 Automated External Defibrillation (AED) units and plans to equip patrol cars with the life-saving devices. In addition, Welch Allyn has donated one additional Welch Allyn AED 10 unit that will be placed in the Cayuga County Public Safety Building in Auburn, NY. A recent research report in Circulation, Journal of the American Heart Association stated that people who experience a sudden cardiac arrest have a better chance of survival in communities where police are equipped with AEDs.
“The goal is to equip all our patrol cars with an AED, and right now we are about one-third of the way there,” said Cayuga County Sheriff Rob Outhouse. “We are dedicated to making AEDs a regular piece of safety equipment in our patrol cars to help save citizens who may suffer a sudden cardiac arrest.”
Eric Allyn, vice president of specialty markets for Welch Allyn, a leading global manufacturer of frontline medical products and solutions, added, “Welch Allyn AEDs are easy to use, thereby reducing the time needed to deliver a critical first shock that could possibly save a life. AED 10s use a simple ‘1-2-3’ rescue approach - a proven lifesaving protocol used throughout the world.”
AEDs are portable devices that deliver an electric shock to the heart to reverse sudden cardiac arrest, a life-threatening onset of a chaotic and unproductive heart rhythm that causes the heart to abruptly stop beating. Welch Allyn AEDs, which feature clear, audible instructions, visual prompts on a high-resolution display, and color-coded defibrillation pads, are intended for easy, quick operation by a minimally-trained user. The units automatically determine if a lifesaving shock is required, yet also protect someone from receiving an inappropriate delivery of electrical current.
