How Will I List and Address the Challenges of the Future?

Challenge #1: Work Within the Budget and Continue the Highest Level of Service.
When I became Sheriff over three years ago we were headed for economic disaster. The spiraling cost of government had a trickle down effect on financing the Sheriff’s Office operations in all Divisions. Our Budgets became leaner suppressing growth in areas that needed attention. What did we do? We continued our programs by seeking other ways of doing business. We financed them via grant programs and by creating revenue streams that were not realized before. To work within the present and future Budgets experience is the key to understanding the process. My past successes are proof that I have the ability, the innovative thought and an aggressive approach for the future that is the cornerstone to cost effective development. Learn More

Challenge #2: Maintain the Public Trust and the Image of the Sheriff’s Office.
There is no question that we inherited a Sheriff’s Office that was damaged by the mismanagement of the past that violated the public’s trust. From the first day of my administration our highly qualified women and men proved that we were a totally new and improved organization. I provided the leadership and inspired others to excel. We have done a lot, yet there is more to be done. We have established a level of trust with the public way beyond that of before. A pro-active attitude with innovative ideas is the key to peak performance for a superior public image. I provided the catalyst we needed then and will continue to provide the vision for our future. Challenge #3: Protecting the Community-Native American Issues:
Our Sheriff’s Office has taken an active approach, protecting this community and our investment pertaining to Native American issues. When the town of Aurelius and the Village of Union Springs reached out for help, we analyzed the problem and responded with solutions. From halting the construction of the casino in Aurelius to ending the illegal gaming facility in Union Springs. These are landmark accomplishments that were spearheaded through the cooperation of my Office, local governments and our respective attorneys. That is what the community asked for and we responded. We still have challenges ahead including Land in Trust and indigenous American tax issues. I again have the experience, the knowledge and the working relationship with all involved in these issues. The problem solving of the past gives me the incentive to take on those of the future. Learn More

Challenge #4 Homeland Security:
People ask about it, the times demand it. I have specialized training in homeland security and emergency response to terrorism. A priority in my administration has been training key personnel in Critical Incident Command and response to terrorist acts both foreign and domestic. This has become a huge benefit to us. We train on these tactical issues monthly and have been able to apply this expertise to the tragic incidents that we handle on a regular basis. We are connected to other law enforcement agencies via inter municipal agreements and are constantly networking, sharing our resources and expertise. We have received funding for training and equipment. My knowledge of the threat and needed response is the key to gaining the resources to remain on the cutting edge of this important issue. My Leadership Style:

I have worked for and with numerous people throughout my career and their differing management/leadership styles have offered valuable lessons to me.

There are times when a democratic style of leadership is appropriate, often in our management sessions or when deciding on training issues with the rank and file. Good leadership in these contexts results in effective teamwork. In the field, however, law enforcement faces challenges that require experienced, rational decisions that often have to be made quickly and without consultation. In these cases, the decision-maker must be prepared to justify his actions. Strong leadership in these situations requires the respect of peers and subordinates for swift and unquestioned compliance with given orders.

I believe I have displayed these abilities and provided effective leadership by example. I get results by seeking appropriate assistance as well as mentoring others so that the greatest levels of success are attained for everyone. Honesty and integrity are qualities that I feel are necessary attributes of a police officer. I live by this ethic and expect this of our Deputies. These standards, along with knowledge, fairness and understanding are the building blocks to our goal of ‘Striving for Excellence."
